YORKSHIRE have offered Joe Root a two-year extension to his contract.

The 20-year-old, from Sheffield, has just enjoyed his first full season in the Yorkshire side and made the sort of impact which has had good judges tipping a bright future.

The opening batsman, whose burgeoning off spin bowling has been used quite often, performed well enough to catch the eye of the England selectors and he was chosen for the England Lions, effectively the A team.

Barnsley off spinner Azeem Rafiq, 20, has already signed a two-year extension as has batsman Gary Ballance, 21.

However, Sheffield’s Ben Sanderson - who began his club career with South Yorkshire League club Whitley Hall - has been released. The 22-year-old seam bowler appeared in the one-day side several times last season.
