Despite a stuttering start to their ECB Yorkshire Premier League season, Sheffield Collegiate made further progress in the Royal London National Club Cricket Knockout when they beat Tickhill by six wickets at Alderson Road.
Billy Root took three wickets as the home team were bowled out for 198, and the former Yorkshire starlet made it a good personal day with 39 runs as Collegiate raced to victory in the 28th over.
Barnsley also made progress in the national competition, beating Bradford League side Hanging Heaton by a convincing 144-run margin at Shaw Lane.
Steve Nuttall hit a splendid 82, Matt Wilson scored 46 and junior James Brown hit a brisk 39 as Barnsley rattled up an impressive 248-7 from their 45 overs, before the hugely promising Ali Jahangir took 5-21 as the visitors were dismissed for 104 in the 26th over.
Barnsley also maintained their 100 per cent record in the league, and stayed two points ahead of Harrogate, after a convincing 132-run success over Driffield at Kings Mill Road.
Jason Booth hit 65, Zoahab 40,Tom Shaw 36no and Nuttall 27 as the leaders posted a solid 251-7 but Driffield, whose batting is normally very strong, would have been confident of victory at tea time. Sadly, for them, they reckoned without the young talented Shaw Lane spinners who took control with seven wickets between them. Jahangir took 4-11, Callum Bethel returned 3-28 and the visitors were all out for 115.
Collegiate fell to a shock three wicket defeat against the Steelmen at Brumby Hall when, after been dismissed for 128, Appleby Frodingham knocked of the arrears with 25 overs to spare. Root topped the Collegiate scorers, hitting 58, and Duncan Heath scored 62no for the home team.
