YORKSHIRE hit back after suffering a batting collapse when their County Championship clash with Essex finally got underway at Headingley.
Earlier a marvellous century from Australian Phil Jaques, on his comeback game for the county, provided more than half Yorkshire’s 246.
After losing Joe Root for two to the fifth ball of the day, Jaques and Joe Sayers, 32, then added 96 before Jaques and fellow left hander Andrew Gale put on 86 before the skipper went for 35 with the score on 184.
Jaques was eighth out having hit 21 fours and a six in his 126 as Yorkshire subsided from 203-3 to 246 all out.
But they hit back with the ball, Scott Patterson claiming three wickets - including two in two balls - and Ryan Sidebottom two as Essex slid to 72-5.
