Northamptonshire showed some overdue resistance but late wickets for Jack Brooks and Ryan Sidebottom kept Yorkshire on course for victory in the County Championship.

Following on 365 behind at Headingley after 94 all out in their first innings, the visitors reached 149 for four in the 49 overs possible on day three, thanks to a second-wicket stand of 89 between James Middlebrook and Kyle Coetzer.

Sidebottom had the latter caught behind for 39, adding to his earlier scalp of Stephen Peters, before Brooks removed Matt Spriegel lbw and Middlebrook, who made 63 before giving wicketkeeper Andrew Hodd his third catch. Rain could abridge the final day’s play, but the hosts will hope to pick up the six wicket for their first win of the new season.
