Sheffield’s Joe Root has been named as one of Wisden’s five Cricketers of the Year for 2014. The Yorkshire batsman, who grew up playing for Sheffield Collegiate CC, was awarded the prestigious honour - previously bestowed upon the likes of Don Bradman, Brian Lara and Glenn McGrath - for his role in England’s 3-0 Ashes win over the travelling Australians last summer.

Root, who has just signed a new Yorkshire deal, is nursing a broken thumb but hopes to return this month.
