Vaughan is welcome back where it started

Michael Vaughan is expected to be in big demand following his retirement from cricket, with media work for the upcoming Ashes series a racing certainty.

But closer to home, in his adopted city of Sheffield, Sheffield Collegiate hope that the former England captain will take advantage of his new-found freedom and increase his visits to their Abbeydale headquarters – home of the Michael Vaughan Cricket Academy.

Collegiate club chairman Richard Ibbotson said: "Michael supports the Academy as much as he can, but I'm hoping that we'll see much more of him now.

"But we haven't discussed anything in detail, yet. We'd definitely welcome any support and assistance he can possibly give, very gratefully.

"A lot will depend on where Michael's future lies – he doesn't live a million miles away and we don't know where he will end up next career-wise.

"He's going to have a hell of a lot of different opportunities and knowing Michael, I suspect he'll take time to assess where he wants to be."

Vaughan brought to an end a career that started at Collegiate after the family moved from Manchester when he was nine, and peaked with an Ashes victory in 2005.

Ibbotson said: "We always thought Michael had the potential to be a good professional cricketer but no-one could have predicted the level that he reached. But it was great to see him progress as far as he did and follow what was a great career. Everyone followed Michael with a great sense of pride, and it's sad he can't carry on playing at the top of his game."

Vaughan's older brother, David, still plays at Collegiate but when asked about the chances of re-uniting the siblings, Ibbotson said: "His announcement does say he's retiring from all forms of cricket – I'm sure we can accommodate him in the summer football team, but I'm not so sure about the cricket!"
