Vaughan 74 as Rana smashes Yorkshire to great win

YORKSHIRE pulled off a remarkable victory over Surrey yesterday after Rana Naved-ul-Hasan smashed 18 from four balls in the final over to clinch a thrilling win at the Oval.

With Michael Vaughan again finding form with a splendid 74, it was some consolation for Yorkshire in what was a "dead rubber" Friends Provident Trophy clash, both teams having failed to qualify from their group.

A limited overs career-best by Surrey's left-handed opener Scott Newman of 177 helped Surrey to their highest limited overs score of the season, 329-8 but it was not enough as Rana's unbeaten 53 from 24 balls turned the match on its head.

After the early loss of Joe Sayers, Yorkshire gave the pursuit with steady top-order contributions as they set out needing to score at over a run-a-ball.

Jacques Rudolph, 37, fell reverse sweeping then came an 88-run stand between Vaughan, whose 74 was scored off only 69 balls, and left hander Adam Lyth.

Having cantered to his 50 from 54 deliveries, the former England skipper accumulated eight fours and a brace of sixes before missing a full-length ball from Alex Tudor to go leg before.

The pugnacious Lyth reached his half-century at a run-a-ball and had top-scored with 88 when he clipped to long-on leaving Yorkshire wobbling at 256-6.

But Rana found a willing partner in Adil Rashid with a feisty 35 and between them they snatched the game from Surrey's grasp with a match-winning stand worth 73 from only 43 balls.

They required 18 to win off the final over bowled by Andre Nel and Rana made light work of it, starting with a six over long-off.

He sliced the second ball to the ropes at point, pulled the third for four through midwicket before the fourth was dispatched to thud into the boards at deep extra-cover and send Yorkshire into raptures.

Earlier, Newman's sublime three-hour stay included 19 fours and four sixes and represented the fourth-best individual one-day innings by a Surrey batsman.

Their total would have been bigger but for a bizarre collapse in the quest for late runs that saw Surrey lose five wickets for one run in the space of eight balls.
