Time is right for Pietersen
Andrew Strauss senses England's date with destiny in the Wanderers Test may just be the stage for Kevin Pietersen to show his true quality.
England were due to begin the final Test this morning 1-0 up on South Africa, needing a draw at worst to complete an unexpected series triumph. Yet Pietersen, for so long the batsman England looked to for a game-breaking innings, has spluttered into and back out of form again since four months out after Achilles surgery.
His return from two attempts in last week's drawn Test at Newlands was six runs.
Strauss nonetheless warns Pietersen remains a danger man - and may just save a special innings for the big stage.
"He won't be happy with what happened in Cape Town," said the England captain.
"I suppose it was one of the performances that he will be least happy about so far in his career, but I am not unhappy with the way he has been playing. At Centurion I thought he batted exceptionally well, and that's only two Tests ago. He's a man for the big occasion."
