Sayers ton keeps Tykes in control

JOE Sayers hit his second County Championship century of the season as Yorkshire built steadily on a position of strength against Somerset at Taunton.

The visitors grabbed a first innings lead of 112 when Matthew Hoggard took the last Somerset wicket without addition to their overnight score of 326. The ex-England seamer finished with five for 82.

Somerset looked to be fighting back when first innings centurion Jacques Rudolph fell for a second ball duck and Anthony McGrath followed to make it 58 for two. But Sayers was dropped on 30 and went on to a hundred off 208 balls, with 15 fours.

Adam Lyth was also given a life on three and progressed to 71 before Yorkshire closed on 329 for five, with a lead of 441. Sayers was out to the last ball of the day for 152 and Jonathan Bairstow ended 54 not out.

The dropped catches cost Somerset dear as they could have had their opponents 62 for four.

A thrilling finish is in prospect at Derby after a dramatic third day in which 15 wickets fell – six of them to Iain O'Brien who claimed Leicestershire's best bowling figures of the season.

The New Zealand seamer took six for 87, including a spell of five for 13 in 23 balls, and wicketkeeper Tom New pouched six catches before scoring his second half century of the game.

After O'Brien had bowled Derbyshire out for 365 to secure a lead of 47 in the LV Division Two clash, Leicestershire slipped to 92 for five, but New's unbeaten 63 and James Allenby's 52 led a recovery that took the visitors to 209 for seven, 256 in front.

Despite the clatter of wickets, the batsmen also scored freely with 386 runs coming in the day and both teams will fancy their chances of celebrating victory.

Nottinghamshire set Lancashire a victory target of 393 as Mark Wagh hit his second hundred of the campaign at Trent Bridge.

The former England A batsman made 131 from 177 balls, striking three sixes and 11 fours, before Notts declared their second innings on 289 for seven, with David Hussey making a quick-fire 74.
