Joe Root was amongst thousands yesterday to pay tribute to tragic Australian batsman Phil Hughes, who passed away after being hit by a short-pitched delivery earlier this week.

Root posted on Twitter: “Awful to wake up to the news! Tragic day for the sport. Thoughts go out to those close to him.” Nottinghamshire paid their own tribute to the 25-year-old at their Trent Bridge ground (pictured above), and director of cricket Mick Newell said: “It is a terrible tradegy.” Yorkshire coach Jason Gillespie added: “He was a fine cricketer... it’s truly heartbreaking.”
