Joe Root battled bravely after an early blow to his thumb to post his maiden one-day international hundred as he and Jos Buttler piled up 303 for six against West Indies.

England’s fifth-wicket pair combined to great effect in a stand of 175, Root (107) standing firm after being hit on the right thumb when he had made just a single.Despite at times appearing in significant discomfort, he anchored the innings expertly following the loss of England’s first two wickets in two balls to Dwayne Bravo. England won the match by 25 runs in Antigua and won the series 2-1.

West Indies were convinced Sunil Narine had Root lbw on 23 but discovered, via Hawkeye, that the ball would have bounced over.
