Root digs in but Tykes face defeat

Yorkshire are heading for a third successive defeat in the County Championship after they were forced to follow on by Sussex on the third day of the Division One match at Hove.

The visitors were dismissed for 273, a total which would have been worse but for some stubborn resistance from opener Joe Root - who top scored with 70 - and a career-best 53 by number 10 Steve Patterson.

As it was, Yorkshire still conceded a first innings deficit of 275 and in 13 overs before stumps they lost opener Joe Sayers for a duck and Root to the final ball of the day before closing on 29 for two, still 246 behind.
