ASTON Hall and Barnsley both sprang a surprise in their Group fixtures in the South Yorkshire League’s Whitworth Cup.

Aston amassed 257-4 against Treeton in Group A, with opener Marshall Pooley unbeaten on 98 and sharing good stands with Asad Butt 47, Scott Hibbert 43 and Amir Riaz 36.

Then Ryan Tingle, 3-39, and Uzman Azeem, 3-40, helped restrict Treeton to 192-9.

Barnsley, in Group B, chased Whiston’s 193-8 (Jafa Nazir 51) and got home with eight balls to spare at 194-5 (Jason Booth 57, Tom Shaw 54).

In the same group, Wath’s Paul Wilkinson had 3-19 in Wickersley’s 105, his three wickets being three of the top five. Lesroy Weekes struck 60 in 62 balls in Wath’s nine wicket win.

Back in Group A, holders Whitley Hall stacked up 256-8 with Jim Tasker 73 and Adam Wilson 68 and Sam Chatterton 32.

Elsecar were reasonably placed at 118-3 but a brilliant run out of Ainsley Swallow for 67 saw the home side fall away and be 156 all out.

Jaco Castle took 4-27 and Ben Webster 3-37.
