Frustrated Yorkshire coach Jason Gillespie was left to rue the slow, sorry state of the pitch as Yorkshire settled for a draw in their LV= County Championship Division One match against Sussex at Arundel yesterday.

Sussex resumed on the final day 21-0, 133 behind Yorkshire’s first-innings 470-7 declared, and then declared themselves on 228-3 with the skippers settling for a share of the spoils, just before 5pm.

“The pitch has got lower and slower as the game has gone on,” said Gillespie.

“It is not really promoting first class cricket.

“It has been a challenge for both teams to try and score at a decent run-rate.

“There has been a lack of bounce and it has been tough for the batsmen,” Gillespie added.

“Jonny Bairstow is quite an attacking player but his take on the field-placings – with no slips and ring fields – made it very difficult to push the scoring rate forward.”
