England call is root of Joe’s joy

Have your say

SHEFFIELD-born batsman Joe Root has expressed his joy at receiving his first call-up to the England Test squad.

The 21-year-old was named in the squad for the four-Test tour of India, which starts in November, along with Yorkshire teammates Jonny Bairstow and Tim Bresnan yesterday.

Root, earmarked as a potential long-term replacement for recently retired Test captain Andrew Strauss at the top of the England batting order, said: “I’m obviously delighted - it’s what you play the game for; you want to represent your country.”

Tykes duo Gary Ballance and Azeem Rafiq, meanwhile, have been included in the England Performance Programme squad to tour India.
