Struggling Doncaster Town came close to pulling off what had seemed like an unlikely win against Barnsley on Saturday.

But, as a result, they remain in the ECB Yorkshire South Premier League drop zone and without a victory since the opening day of the season.

Town struggled to 101-9 in a match reduced to 38 overs a side.

However, Barnsley were in big trouble at 78-7 before limping to a two wicket win with just three balls to spare.

Doncaster got their innings off on the wrong foot as they lost both openers for just four runs between them.

Joe Gallagher scored 20 and skipper Luke Townsend made 21 as they stuttered to 101-9.

Ali Jahangir took the bowling plaudits for Barnsley by claiming 4-17.

It was a similar story when the visitors batted though and, after opener Jonathan Trower top scored with 20, they struggled to 78-7 with defeat looking imminent.

However, Jahangir steered them to victory with 18 not out.

Townsend took 3-26 and Will Street claimed 3-43.

Town visit fourth-placed Sheffield Collegiate on Saturday.

The only team beneath Doncaster in the table is win-less Rotherham, who were beaten at the hands of leaders Appleby Frodingham at the weekend.

Rotherham batted first and could only muster 80 all out, with Scott Hibbett top scoring with 23. Duncan Heath snared 5-19.

Appleby also struggled in the bowler-friendly conditions but scraped a victory by a margin of three wickets. Stumper Alex Grimes was 60 not out when the winning runs were hit.

Muhammed Ilyas give them most problems with 3-15 off 12 overs.
