DARREN GOUGH: I'd rather have played football for England - VIDEO
DARREN Gough will bowl over soccer fans with his football knowledge next year at the 2010 World Cup.
He will join TalkSport colleagues to broadcast live from the finals in South Africa.
Sports fans might question the credentials of a cricketer going off to cover the biggest football tournament in the world.
But intelligent, opinionated, and funny, Gough has impressed radio listeners with his extensive sporting knowledge. And he's quick to stress that he started out playing football on a Government training scheme – first with his beloved Barnsley and then at Rotherham United.
He told The Star: "I would have preferred to have played for England at football rather than cricket - without a doubt.
"My first love was always to play football for Barnsley. They let me go, to their demise, and I went to Rotherham United. I spent just over a year there. Then I ended up going to play for Yorkshire as a cricketer for 20-years."
His England football dream is set to become a reality when he joins Gazza, Peter Shilton, Les Ferdinand, Paul Parker, Steve Hodge, Des Walker and others to play in a 1990 World Cup charity rematch between England and Germany for the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation, at St James' Park, Newcastle, on July 26.
Gough, part of the regular TalkSport team with Alan Brazil, Stan Collymore and Ian Wright, co-hosts the Friday 4pm to 7pm drivetime slot with sports journalist Adrian Durham, on 1089 and 1053 AM, also on digital radio.
Tickets are in short supply for a Darren Gough Celebrity Golf Day at Beauchief and an Evening Dinner at Sheffield City Hall Ballroom, for Weston Park Cancer Hospital Charity, on Wednesday. For tickets call the charity on 0114-226 5370 or Darren Hayes on 0776 4939354. Visit www.wphcancercharity.org.uk
