Last season’s South Yorkshire League champions Treeton have been coming up against pretenders for their title each game for the past three weeks - and it’s the Great Pretenders they’ll be up against today.
Treeton go to Whitley Hall, the team they pushed into second place in the Premier Division last season.
However, Whitley are now out in front and suggesting they have the title bit between the teeth.
Treeton’s poor form - five defeats already - has put them out of the title race and in the bottom half and they face a Whitley side unbeaten, in form and with Jaco Castle firing.
In fact, it pits against each other the players ranked as the league’s top all rounders in Castle and Steve Foster.
There can be no doubt that Foster has been the leading all rounder in the league in the past decade.
He’s topped the Premier Division bowling averages five times in the past ten years and the batting four times. Castle has topped the bowling averages once but been the leading batsman for the past three seasons.
In both discplines last year, he bettered Foster - as outstanding an all-round performer as the league has ever seen and certainly no one has ever enjoyed such success over a period of time - and, clearly, Castle is poised to challenge this time for the title of the best all-round cricketer in the league.
