JOE Root’s instant impact in his first appearances for England have excited selectors and earned him a place on the forthcoming tour to New Zealand.
The 21-year-old Sheffield batsman is named in both the Test and ODI squads for the series starting next month and it follows the impressive start to his Test career in India and then his form in the current one day series.
“He’s shown us what he can do and that he is very comfortable in the international arena,” said National selector Geoff Miller. “He’s taken everything in his stride and we thought it best to get him in as quickly as possible. He still has to work hard - the opposition will try and find him out - but we’re excited about him.”
There is no place for fellow Yorkshireman Tim Bresnan in either squad due to his ongoing elbow problem. However, Jonny Bairstow gets in both squads and the T20 one as back-up wicketkeeper.
