One of international cricket’s best loved commentators believes Sheffield-born batsman Joe Root will “beat an awful lot of records” in his England career.

Henry Blofeld, a regular member of the BBC Test Match Special team, thinks the promising Yorkshire player will be a key performer for his country in all forms of the game.

Root, a product of Sheffield Collegiate CC, claimed his first hundred for England at Headingley, his home ground, in their 247-run Test victory over New Zealand last month. The result sealed a 2-0 triumph for the hosts and Root was named Man of the Series. It has been a meteoric rise to stardom for the Root and Blofeld is backing the 22-year-old to keep on impressing in the international arena.

He told The Star: “Joe is a good player and got a big future ahead of him. He will be a huge part of England’s future. He is still very young but I wouldn’t be surprised if he goes on to beat an awful lot of records. You can’t accurately forecast how somebody is going to go on but Joe is a very fine player who has got every stroke.”

Root is likely to feature in England’s third and final One-Day International with New Zealand at Trent Bridge this afternoon. He hit 28 and 30 as England slumped to successive defeats. Fast bowlers Stuart Broad (bruised knee) and Steven Finn (shin) could be recalled to the starting line-up, having practised in the nets yesterday. England take on Australia in their opening Champions Trophy clash on Saturday.
