Gary Ballance, still on a high after his Ashes selection, duly completed his century on the second day of Yorkshire’s final County Championship game against Surrey at The Oval.
He made 148 in their 434 but relegated Surrey fought back, openers Ricky Burns and Dominic Sibley putting on a century stand.
Yorkshire resumed on 316-6 with Ballance 72no. He and Adil Rashid took their seventh wicket stand to 72 before Rashid fell for 43 with the score on 368.
Ballance was ninth out after a 232 ball knock which included 20 fours and a six.
When Surrey replied, Yorkshire were unable to make early inroads and they closed on 172-1.
Derbyshire appear doomed to relegation after a disastrous batting collapse Warwickshire in a game they had to win to have a chance of staying in the First Division.
Warwickshire, who were 148-7 on the first day, finished on 391-9 dec with Chris Woakes unbeaten on 152 and sharing a ninth wicket stand of 166 with Maurice Chambers, 58.
Derbyshire collapsed and closed on 44-5.
