WHATEVER his international compatriots get out of the Test series against England, one Sri Lankan playing locally can point out that he’s a winner already.
All rounder Chathura Athukorala has had an excellent start to the season with Elsecar with both bat and ball, and, as a result has been named the Ben Bailey Homes South Yorkshire League Player of the Month, covering April and May - the first such award this season.
Chathura is the leading wicket taker in the league and has also had five innings of 50 or more.
He has also started June pretty well too and on Saturday took 8-50 which included a hat-trick to help dismiss Rockingham for 149 as Elsecar enjoyed a six wicket win, Brett Hunsley scoring 76 not out.
The League’s Junior award goes to Jack Simmonite of Aston Hall. Jack completed his maiden century for the club against Mexborough on May 28.
Most exciting finish came in the Division One match between Rotherham Town and Rossington.
Rotherham were dismissed for 186 (Jonathan Plater 45, Gareth Purshouse 40, Alex Rowland 5-36) and it looked an ample when Rossington slumped to 64-7.
Then Dominic McGough set about the bowling and, aided by Stuart Groves, 44no, he hit 73 off 68 balls. They took Rossington ever closer only for McGough to be run out off the final ball when aiming to tie the scores, ending on 185-8.
