Barnsley eye second spot showdown

BARNSLEY are poised to finish as runners-up in the Yorkshire League - and it could be decided at Shaw Lane this weekend.

They are scheduled to play third-placed Yorkshire Academy, the only side who can overhaul them in the bid to finish second to newly-crowned champions York.

With a maximum of 16 points still available from the final two matches, Barnsley have a 14 point lead over the Academy who have to win at Shaw Lane and do so with a maximum eight points to maintain any chance of overhauling them.

Barnsley know that even if they lost Saturday's game they could still clinch second spot by not being bowled out and accruing at least one consolation point.

Their latest win on Monday was by 159 runs over the young Sheffield United side.

In Barnsley's 274-6, Simon Widdup made 119 and shared a third wicket stand of 141 with Azeem Rafiq, 62, back in action after his recent suspension.

United made 115 with young opener David Rodgers hitting 46. Rafiq took 4-30 and Richard Wilkinson 3-37.

Sheffield Collegiate lost in a tense finish to Scarborough by one wicket at North Marine Road.

Nicky Gaywood made 57, Joe Root 54 and Alex Patmore 36 in Collegiate's 195 which Scarborough overtook by one wicket with Evans 63 not out.

Rotherham Town crushed Cleethorpes by 150 runs. Oliver Whittaker struck a fine 129 not out and Jordan Lowe 34 as Rotherham reached 267-6 before dismissing the visitors for just 117 having no answer to Chris Page, 6-31, and Tom Knight, 4-11.

Doncaster Town's 225-9, with 54 each from Alex Gosney and James Stuart plus 36 from Chris Spinella was too much for Castleford who held on at 145-9 (Andrew Parkin-Coates 4-34).

Other results: Yorkshire Academy 175-8 *Appleby Frodingham 127; York 301-7 (55) *Driffield Town 262-9 (55). Hull & YPI 248-6 (55) Harrogate 187 (47.1)

Barnsley's 2nd XI won the Crowther Cup on Monday when easily beating Wakefield Thornes 2nds by nine wickets.

Wakefield made only 84, man of the match Andy Ivill taking 3-17 off 10 overs. Barnsley cruised home at 85-1.
