Gary Ballance celebrated his inclusion in England’s Ashes party by hitting an unbeaten 72 as Yorkshire posted 316 for six on the opening day of their County Championship Division One clash with Surrey at The Oval.
Phil Jaques had earlier held the Tykes’ top-order together with a vital 88, before Ballance took centre stage and moved past 1,000 Championship runs for the season. After winning the toss, Yorkshire saw off the new ball to be 81 for two at lunch.
Then Jaques and Kane Williamson shared in a productive third-wicket stand of 88 in just over 31 overs.
Jonny Bairstow and Ballance added 58 in 14 overs before Bairstow was lbw for 24.
A sixth-wicket stand of 69 between Ballance and Andrew Gale saw Yorkshire press home their advantage.
