Ballance clinches runners-up spot for Barnsley
A CENTURY from Zimbabwean ace Gary Ballance helped Barnsley secure second spot in the 2010 league with one week remaining, when they beat third-placed rivals Yorkshire Academy at Shaw Lane on Saturday.
Ballance's knock of 101, coupled with contributions of 61 and 40 not out from Matthew Wilson and Azeem Rafiq, helped Barnsley to reach 252-6 in their innings, which proved too much for the Academy.
Barnsley's Richard Wilkinson was once again the star with the ball, taking 7-63 to end Yorkshire's innings early on 173.
Also hitting a century was James Moorhouse, whose score of 118 helped Rotherham Town to victory over Sheffield United. Now sixth in the table, a victory in their final match next Saturday could well see Rotherham move up to fifth spot in the final rankings.
Rotherham totalled an impressive 284-7, with Nathan Smith scoring 89, and although most of their colleagues struggled to reach double figures it still proved enough.
In reply, United reached 162-9, and although they clung on to their final wicket they still did not have enough runs in the bank to take even a losing bonus point. Chris Page took 5-31 to keep United at bay and ensure victory for Rotherham.
Pinned well back in the bottom half of the table, Sheffield Collegiate overcame the challenge of fifth-placed Castleford in their clash at Savile Park.
Collegiate were all out for 227 with Castleford's John Randerson taking 4-39, but it proved to be enough of a score, with Joe Root scoring 73 and Nick Gaywood 62.
Castleford salvaged a losing bonus point for getting to within 75 per cent of the target, but they never threatened to catch Collegiate's total. Nadeem Khan took 3-50 to finish as best of the Collegiate bowlers in an innings where wickets were evenly shared.
Doncaster Town's youthful side slipped to another defeat at Driffield on Saturday, losing out by three wickets after struggling to find any consistency. They totalled 193 all out, with only Gareth Cox (69), Nick Morley (34) and Curtis Free (31)scoring more than 30, but Nick Hardgrave took 6-71 to peg them back.
Driffield reached a winning 198-7 in 44 overs, despite James Stuart taking 3-28.
