IF Jonny Bairstow does get the nod for his England Test debut against West Indies in the three-match series opener at Lord’s today, then it would be perfect if the person presenting him with his cherished cap is the same one who presented it on his one-day international debut.

Geoff Boycott, a big friend of Jonny’s ex-Yorkshire wicketkeeper father David, did the honours then and the legendary Yorkshire and England batsman has always been a big admirer of Bairstow junior, tipping him for Test status a long time ago.

“It was nice when Geoff presented me with that cap, he has always been a family friend and he has always been there for advice if I’ve needed it,” said Jonny who is 22.
