Alex Welsh’s last act memory

Have your say

WHAT a perfect send off - and a perfect last act for the club - it proved to be for key player Alex Welsh in Whitley Hall’s big triumph as they became Yorkshire champions.

Alex, who first joined the Ecclesfield-based South Yorkshire League club as a nine-year-old, is emigrating to Australia shortly and he will carry with him, amongst the trophy winning memories, his final act for the club.

For he took the catch, down at third man, which secured the last Wrenthorpe wicket to ensure Whitley successfully defended the Yorkshire Champions Trophy.

“It was really appropriate it should be Alex who took the catch to win it,” said Whitley’s Steve Fletcher. “He started here playing softball as a kid, came through our ranks, had spells elsewhere but came back a couple of years ago and he was one of six lads in Sunday’s team who began with us as youngsters.

“It’s a great achievement winning this again and everyone is rightly proud.”
