City demand £2m for Ched

MANCHESTER City could demand around £2m for Ched Evans; the striker Sheffield United believe can help them reach the Premier League next season.

Kevin Blackwell, United's manager, offered 1.5m for the Wales international earlier this month after identifying Evans as the perfect foil for Darius Henderson and Jamie Ward.

But despite being deemed surplus to requirements at Eastlands where manager Mark Hughes , is expected to embark on a lavish spending spree, City are wary of setting a precedent by allowing any of their players to leave for cut-price fees.

Hughes' hardline stance means United must increase their valuation of a forward who scored 10 goals in 20 starts during a loan spell at Norwich two seasons ago or risk losing one of their top targets to a Championship rival.

Cardiff City are also understood to have be monitoring Evans' situation and, having agreed to sell Roger Johnson to Birmingham for 5m, are preparing to flex their own financial muscle.

However, despite losing their top-flight parachute payment following their heart-breaking defeat by Burnley in the play-off final, United are confident they can still be a force to be reckoned with during the summer window.

Midfielder Lee Williamson has already arrived from Watford while winger Kyel Reid, previously of West Ham, is expected to be unveiled when he completes a medical.

Arturo Lupoli, who had been linked with United after his loan spell ended, has left Fiorentina and joined Serie B club Ascoli.

Blackwell, who attempted to sign Evans in January, will not be short of options if the 20-year-old proves elusive.

Particularly as Leeds are reportedly mulling over the possibility of inviting him to complete a cash plus player exchange involving Jermaine Beckford and Billy Sharp.

Blackwell will hold further talks with Matthew Kilgallon when he returns from holiday next week aimed at extending the centre-half's contract.

United have signed a young player linked to their development partners in Spain. Carlos Pomares, a 16-year-old centre-half, will work with Ron Reid and his academy staff.
