Wounded Curtis set to turn up the heat
IF you think it was hot here earlier this week, spare a thought for boxer Curtis Woodhouse.
He's been engaged in highly-competitive sparring and an intensive training programme in the unrelenting heat of Cyprus.
It's all blood and sweat ... after the tears of losing a professional fight for the first time.
The former Sheffield United and Rotherham United footballer turned boxer was picked off by so-called Isle of Wight assassin Jay Morris in an unexpected defeat over six rounds at Ulster Hall, Belfast, in April.
It was back to the drawing board for Woodhouse, who had not been expected to have lost his 100 per cent record cheaply, following his record of 10 straight wins.
Woodhouse, aged 29, is being trained by Rotherham manager Dave Coldwell, alongside world champion David Haye, in the preparation camp at Cyprus.
Haye had been preparing for his heavyweight title fight with Wladimir Klitschko on June 20 but yesterday pulled out through a back injury. The nature or severity of Haye's problem is unknown and the 28-year-old Londoner will see a doctor next week.
Coldwell told The Star: "Curtis has done really well over here. He has been sparring hard with Christopher Sebire, who is boxing for the French title. We've been working on Curtis's defence and he has come on loads.
"Now Curtis's entire concentration is on coming back and winning his next fight at the Olympia, Liverpool, on July 4."
Sheffield's Nadeem Siddique boxes Essex's Tom Glover at Robin Park Centre, Wigan, on June 13, while Junior Witter bids to regain his world light-welterweight title against Devon Alexander in Florida on July 11.
Dennis Hobson's Fight Academy is to stage a show at Doncaster Racecourse on July 18. On July 26, the Octagon, Sheffield, will stage fights involving Carl Baker, Billy Boyle, Nicki Smedley, Daniel Teasdale and Femi Fehintola.
