We're not Wild about the referee's decision
SHEFFIELD boxing manager Glynn Rhodes is still angry at the decision that cost 22-year-old prospect Carl Wild the Central Area light-heavyweight title and is to strive for a re-match.
It follows a controversial decision after an electrifying ten rounds against Lancashire favourite Darren Stubbs on Stubbs' home ground at Shaw near Oldham.
Referee Phil Edwards awarded a 98-93 victory to Stubbs.
Wild showed tremendous class, and looked to have a clear lead by the halfway stage of the championship battle, with manager Rhodes claiming: "Carl was given a raw deal.
"He was outstanding. We were convinced he deserved the verdict for his cleaner punching and the sheer quality of his performance along with the strength and accuracy of his shots against a brawler.
"We could just about have taken a verdict narrowly against him because this was a magnificent contest, even if he did not get the credit he deserved.
"But the margin of victory for Stubbs, who we admit put up a dogged performance, was mind-boggling."
"However, it can only have been an excellent experience for Carl and we can only build on this performance. "
Wild, with only three years' experience as a pro, produced quality shots from the start.
A stream of left jabs and a tight defence seemed to put him ahead at halfway.
"The score was a terrible disappointment after a great performance by Carl, and I am going to campaign strongly to try to get a return challenge for the Central Area title on one of my future shows in Sheffield," said Rhodes.
"Anybody who saw the contest will admit that it was one of the fights of the year - a real thriller."
Although Stubbs, 37, and a British and International Masters champion, was jubilant at what he thought was a deserved victory, he made it clear he is now a fan of the Sheffield fighter.
"If he trains hard Carl is certainly a great prospect, and I have got to admit he has an educated left hand," he said. "I've got the scars to prove it.
"But I think he's got to be a lot fitter so he can sustain the tempo he sets early."
n There was a Sheffield victory to celebrate on the show for super featherweight Mo Khaled from the Ingle camp.
He was a clear 58-56 winner over six rounds against Rochdale's Anser Hussain, and the bout was a sizzler from start to finish.
Khaled won the first, fifth and six rounds with high-tempo boxing and Hussain was on the back foot from the start.
The impressive Khaled looked as fresh in the closing minutes of the sixth as he did at the start to underline his stamina and fitness.
