NEIL BEEVERS looks set to end his boxing career on medical grounds.

The Wombwell fighter, aged 27, fought at both welterweight and light-middleweight in an eight fight career that begun only two years ago.

After losing his last fight against Chris Johnson, for the Central Area title in May, Beevers had been expected to fight at Barnsley Metrodome in September but after failing an eye test, he has been advised to stop boxing.

Trainer Mick Wale said: “When Neil rung me and I could tell he was devastated. The doctors have told him that he’s got nerve damage between his eye and his brain and although they haven’t told him to stop boxing, it’s the sensible thing to do.” A former Nottingham Forest youth player, Beevers took up boxing after failing to make the grade on the pitch. Beevers won the Masters title in his seventh fight.

A Carl Greaves show at Barnsley Metrodome on September 23 is set to feature Thorpe Hesley’s Neil Dawson against Sheffield’s Jon Ibbotson for the British Masters cruiserweight title.
