Stefy is Bull-ish about new life as a promoter

‘A natural progression’ is how Stefy Bull has described his transformation from fighter to promoter in the space of two years.

After defeat to former footballer Curtis Woodhouse in 2010 the Conisbrough southpaw began to focus his attentions on training treble bantamweight champion Jamie McDonnell amongst others at his Mexborough Empress Ballroom stable with fellow trainer Dave Hulley.

This week has seen the 34-year-old being awarded with his own promoter’s licence.

He is now a registered trainer, manager and promoter and will host his first show at The Dome on March 2.

The youngest male promoter in the country says he is delighted with the news.

The ex-champ told The Star: “It’s really exciting. This has always been the long-term goal that we’ve been working towards with my business partner Steve Phillips.

“We’re managing 16 fighters and I’m taking more in front of the board soon, so we’re technically working with 20 of our own fighters who want work.

“Boxing has been my life and it’s my obsession. We’ve got some talent that needs nurturing and it’s good that their destinies are in our hands.”

Bull’s first show comes only eight days before McDonnell’s Dome fight with Malik Bouziane, but he’s hopeful that ticket sales won’t be affected as all of his Doncaster fighters including Gavin McDonnell (Jamie’s twin) Connor Nixon and Charlie Thompson will be on his show as well as Millennium gym’s Doncaster fighter Maxi Hughes and Sheffield’s Joe Rodgers.

“We’re looking at having a nine or 10 fight bill at Doncaster in this first show but we’ll be looking to branch out into different locations.” said Bull.

“I’ve got a lot of Barnsley fighters so a show there is a possibility of having shows there too.”

Bull also said he hoped the confusion regarding Jamie switching trainers ahead of his fight with Bouziane had been put to bed. McDonnell turned down the opportunity to work with Peterborough’s Kevin Sanders.
