Sporting chance from Johnny
FORMER boxing world champion Johnny Nelson is leading an initiative aimed at giving children better opportunities to compete in sport.
To be known as The Johnny Nelson Pathways Foundation, it is an organisation that hopes to provide underprivileged children with funds and equipment to participate.
“It is all about creating opportunities for youngsters who wouldn’t normally be able to afford to take them,” said Sheffield’s Nelson, who held the WBO cruiserweight championship for six years.
“When they, or more specifically the parents can’t afford the gear then they have no chance of taking part, so we’re looking to provide the gear for them. We want to get into schools and make it easier for kids to compete in a range of sports, not just here either, but all over the place.”
The scheme is to be publicly launched in February.
