Two Sheffield fighters are battling it out to be named the Young Boxer of the Year.
Kid Galahad and Adam Etches have been nominated by the Boxing Writers organisation. Superbantamweight Galahad, 23, has a perfect 14 fight record, while middleweight Etches, 22, is unbeaten over 12.
Galahad looks ready to land the bigger title of the two so far - he fights for the British title against Jezza Dickens (also nominated) at Magna Centre, Rotherham, on September 14. The Ingle man has the backing of heavyweight Tyson Fury.
Fury said: “He’s the pick to be the next superstar. To all the world champions: Galahad’s the one to watch out for, it isn’t the likes of Scott Quigg and Frampton.”
Galahad, 23, faces Dickens for the Lonsdale Belt at the Magna, Rotherham, next month, live on Channel 5 and Fury believes Kid will show he is ready for anyone.
“Expect a very good boxing display, sharp punches, flashy eye-catching combinations, footwork. In my opinion after this fight, he’s ready to take on all the best in the division - I tipped this kid when he was 1 and 0 and he’s now moving on in levels.
Etches, who is on Kell Brook’s undercard at Sheffield Arena on October 26, has an 83%KO rate, compared with Galahad’s 50%.
Previous winners of the Writers’ accolade include Sheffield’s Naseem Hamed.
