Heavyweight Richard Towers left Sheffield’s Ingle gym to train on the London circuit - but his former mentors will be in his heart when he boxes on Saturday at Bethnal Green, east London.

Towers, 35, has not boxed since losing his unbeaten record a year ago to Lucas Browne in a Commonwealth title eliminator TKO. Today he explained his reasoning behind leaving Wincobank - he now trains with Adam Booth, former trainer ex WBA World Champion David Haye.

“I lost my last fight so me and Brendan Ingle sat down and agreed it best I moved around a bit and picked up as much knowledge and experience sparring with different heavyweights. It was always difficult getting that kind of thing in Sheffield” he said, ahead of this weekend’s six rounder against Croatian Hrvoje Kisicek, 34.

“I’d previously sparred with David Haye for his fight with Tyson Fury and in doing so came across one of the kindest, hardest-working ‘encyclopaedia brains of boxing,’ in Adam Booth! It was clearly meant to be and here I am with my first fight (under Booth) approaching.

“I speak to Brendan all the time and he seems pleased with my progress. I love Brendan and hope one day I can make him proud.”

The Browne loss was a set-back and 6ft 8ins Towers said: “When a fighter loses it affects all sorts of things including confidence but the week after I was sparring with David Price so I never took my foot off the gas. All the negatives soon fade. All we can do is learn from our mistakes. Me and Adam have a plan of where we go from here on. It’s ‘all or nothing’ and aiming high.”

Towers (W14 (KO 11) L1) says there are some good heavyweights coming through.

“Kash Ali is a dangerous firecracker of a man and still young. Dave Allen is nicknamed the White Rhino; that says it all. There are some exciting times ahead and hopefully I can be a part of that after I ‘whup’ this boy tomorrow. I want to destroy any man who comes in front of me in that ring as I know success will bring many other opportunities and belts all of which will pave a way for the people I love. I’m most certainly prepared to give everything I’ve got trying.”
