HEAVYWEIGHT Richard Towers has been felled by an ear problem - and has had to pull out of a once-in-a-lifetime fight in Hong Kong.

The giant Sheffield fighter experienced ear pain on a flight back from a training camp in the Canary Islands and an investigation has revealed a drum perforation. He had to pull out of a planned bout with Australian Lucas Browne.

Trainer Dominic Ingle said: “Richard is devastated. He’s had fantastic preparation - sparring with the best guy in the world (world champion Wladimir Klitschko) and is in great shape. He wanted to carry on with the fight but he’d only get to Hong Kong and fail the medical.”

One Ingle fighter who has overcome a recent illness - and fights tomorrow - is Kid Galahad (aka Barry Awad)/

The super-bantamweight had to pull out of a contest with Steve Molitor in October because of throat problems.

Now he has an eight-round ‘tick-over’ against Spanish champion Ivan Ruiz Morotoe at Hull.

Ingle said: “Barry held his own with WBO champion Ricky Burns in sparring and he’s three weight divisions above . We’re hoping he’ll get a shot at the British title soon.”
