It’s probably a good thing that Liam Cameron isn’t doing any male-modelling any more.
He says his face is full of wrinkles because of all the pain he has inflicted on himself in training camp for Saturday’s Commonwealth title attempt.
The Sheffield super-middleweight is in peak physical condition for the scrap with Lancashire’s Luke Blackledge...but it has been a gruelling slog, he admits.
“I have prepared for pure hell in the ring - anything less than that will be a bonus” says the 24-year-old.
“I have trained for this proper old-school, running miles in the rain, doing weights - if you took me to any gym you could not have asked them to get this lad any fitter.”
Cameron has been pleased with his sparring too. “I’ve worked with Gary Mayor, who always spars with Carl Froch and other fighters who have come-forward at me.
“It is great to know that I was fresher at the end than my partners.”
The Manor Park man is aware that Blackledge (won 18 (KO 6) lost 2 (KO 1) drawn 2 = 22 record) is an almost mirror image of himself - with his (won 18 (KO 6) +lost 3 (KO 0) + drawn 0 = 21) sheet. “He is the same age as me and he even has a tiger (tattoo) on his arm like I do!” said Cameron.
The pair meet in Blackburn. Cameron’s manager Dennis Hobson warns: “Liam should be mature enough to take it, but he has to be mentally strong enough as well as physically.”
