Sheffield boxer Jez Wilson is looking forward towards his English title challenge on Saturday night - but he’s looking forward to Sunday morning a whole lot more.

“I just want to get it out of the way now” says the tough middleweight, who hopes to wake up on Sunday with Lewis Taylor’s English championship belt next to him.

“It is hard work, the dieting, working until 7pm at night (as a fire officer) training...and having two kids” he says.

“The nerves start to kick in now ahead of the weigh-in (The Rutland Hotel Glossop Rd Sheffield 1pm, Friday) and fight night.

“But it will be a great night for local boxing fans and may the best man win.”

That level of sportsmanship is not always visible in boxing, but it’s been a feature of the pre-fight build-up, throughout.

Crosspool’s Wilson says: “Lewis is a good boxer and a nice kid and has been in with some good opponents. I am not underestimating him one bit. People say he might not be a big puncher but he is strong and anybody can hurt you in those 10 ounce gloves if they connect in the right place.”

Given his busy lifestyle (Dronfield’s Taylor also works full time,) Wilson says he has not researched his opponent’s style in detail.

“I’ve not seen him, I don’t pay much attention to that sort of thing...there is no plan really, I just go in there (Magna Centre, Rotherham) and see what happens. He is a good boxer but I can be too - I am not just going to steam forward, I will be using my brains.”

Wilson, at 36, hopes for a late-career charge at other titles if he wins. “After the English title, hopefully it will be on to bigger and better fights - I’m not interested in journeymen - and something for lucrative - but I’ll know more on Sunday!”
