Kell Brook backed the wrong horse in Saturday’s all-American title clash in New York.
Sheffield’s IBF world welterweight champion had tipped Shawn Porter to beat Keith Thurman on Saturday. As did Jessie Vargas - Brook’s scheduled opponent for Bramall Lane on September 3 - who thought Porter deserved to win.
Porter had been yearning to for a re-match with Brook after losing his title to him 22 months ago.
But he was outpointed by Thurman - an opponent that many Brook fans would love to see face their hero.
Meanwhile, Sky reported that promoter Eddie Hearn says Brook “remains locked in final negotiations” over the Vargas unification fight.

n Clinton Woods, the former IBF light heavyweight champion, is coming out of retirement to take part in a cancer-charity boxing match. He is up against David Wroe. Woods is supporting Lee Brown, a former Dinnington Comprehensive School pupil, who was diagnosed with a gastrointestinal tumour in February. The event takes place at Woods’ gym in Westfield on July 9. Lee says: “ I want to promote the benefits of having a positive attitude towards dealing with a cancer diagnosis and do my part in finding a cure.”
