It was the toughest fight of his life - and one that Kell Brook almost messed up.
The unbeaten Sheffielder had conditioning problems going into his duel against American Carson Jones. While Brook’s improved all-round fitness regime has made him stronger few people would have expected him to have to face the durable scrapper again.
Yet the Grenoside fighter’s promoter has been looking for a Summer opponent for Brook, when Brook will have fully recovered from the injury that robbed him of his world title tilt with Devon Alexander. And Jones may get the nod; a year almost to the day since he went 12 gruelling rounds with Brook.
Hearn told I Film London: “We’re trying to make Carson Jones fight for July 13. I think it’s a hell of a fight for Kell to come back in. He has a little bit of unfinished business and I want to shape his tools up. He’s been out since October” - a reference to Brook’s third round KO of Hector Saldivia at Sheffield Arena.
Hearn also noted how Amir Khan struggled against Mexican Julio Diaz at the same venue, recently. Hearn said: “I’m trying to make a Julio Diaz fight for September at Sheffield Arena. He’s a credible opponent for Kell. I believe Kell will smash him and send out a statement and others will realise who the daddy is in the UK in the welterweight division.”
