Lifeguard saves her best for European quest

MEDAL magnet Sharon Holford has won a gold in a European Championships - to add to the silver she won last year.

She started off her quest by beating Virginie Nave from France 4-3 to reach the semi-final.

Rotherham-based Sharon, a lifeguard at Wingfield Pool, beat F Lucaron from Italy 4-1 to reach the final where she outpointed Katarzyna Czuba of Poland 5-4 to become European gold medalist.

Aspire (formerly Handsworth, Sheffield) ABC coach Ronny Tucker said: "Sharon originally boxed for Herol Graham and she lost her first four contests. However, she always had the potential.

"When she came to us I told her that one day she would box for England.

"Typically, Sharon said 'no way will I ever be good enough' - but look at her now.

"What a 12 months it has been for the 29-year-old - ABA champion 2008, European silver medalist 2008, ABA champion 2009 and European champion 2009. Not bad for a girl who didn't think she was good enough."

Tucker added: "I am so pleased for Sharon; she has worked hard for the past three months.

"She has had a rigid training schedule which she has stuck to religiously so she really deserved the success that the hard work has brought.

"Sharon will have two weeks off to enjoy herself and then she will be back in the gym."

It has been a good season for amateur boxing in Sheffield.

Callum Cotton (Parson Cross) won the NABC title and was a finalist in the Junior ABAs.

Liam Cameron (Steel City) won the senior ABAs at only 18, and now Holford has her place in the limelight.
