DONCASTER Knights were spared another possible wasted journey to the capital today when London Welsh called off their rearranged Championship match at Old Deer Park in good time yesterday afternoon.
Knights, who ruled the pitch ‘too hard’ under a soft surface when they arrived at the ground last week - a stance supported by the referee - were forced to travel on the day of the game after an RFU referee decided on the Friday afternoon that the game could go ahead.
But the referee who inspected the ground yesterday afternoon, and who took last night’s weather into account, called the game off.
Although disappointed at his side missing out on a game for the third time this year, the Knights won’t now have to play three games in eight days - including next Saturday’s home game against derby rivals Rotherham Titans.
The game, which Knights officials are hoping will produce a club-record crowd of close to 5,000, is being shown live on Sky Sports.
