Could one of the Summer’s big boxing nights of the year mean Sheffield will lose out on Kell Brook’s next world-title contest?
Fight fans in the city are longing for a Brook show at Bramall Lane, possibly against Danny Garcia. But Matchroom promoter Eddie Hearn is working on staging Anthony Joshua’s first IBF title defence at Wembley on July 9, live on Sky. That’s the same night Tyson Fury takes on Wladimir Klitschko, on Boxnation.
In the scrap for the biggest TV audience, Hearn may want to place Brook on the Wembley show, to attract further exposure. While that would be a blow for South Yorkshire fans - who have longed to see Brook compete in a football stadium setting - it might make financial sense to all concerned.
Brook has told The Star he is “pestering, poking and pushing” Hearn for the big fight that would define his career even more than the night he beat Shawn Porter to land the IBF welterweight world title.
