Jez Wilson has had more than his fair share of disappointments - but the latest is his biggest blow to date.
The Crosspool middleweight was pencilled in for a lucrative appointment with Chris Eubank Jr, on Saturday. Wilson had suffered a broken jaw against John Ryder in April. And a while one doctor cleared him to take on Eubank, there were concerns that more time should be given for it to heal...so he lost his chance.
Eubank now faces Croatian Ivan Jukic, instead, on the Tyson Fury undercard. Wilson, who has been dodged by several aspiring UK middleweights, said: “I was sick as a dog. I don’t know about another shot; we will try. Boxing is like this, one minute it’s on next it’s off.”
The 34-year-old said: “The jaw is healing I can’t even feel it now; but I’ve got to have full six months off to make sure if it gets whacked it doesn’t go again. After that, it’s deemed totally healed so I can box again after October 5. My license runs out in March so if anything good comes up before then we will see.” Barnsley’s Ben Wager competes on the Fury undercard, he fights unbeaten light welter Tom Stalker.
Sheffield fighters Adam Etches and Scott Jenkins will be on the undercard of Kid Galahad at Ponds Forge, Sept 20.
Other bouts coming up: Martin Ward v Jason Cunningham for Commonwealth bantam title, Andy Townend v Lee Connelly (both Doncaster Dome, Sept 6) Chad Gaynor v Ahmet Patterson for English welter title (iceSheffield Sept 12) and on Sept 13 there is a Dennis Hobson Octagon show, featuring Lewis Taylor v Matthew Mallin. Undercard: Hassan Ahmed, Waleed Din, Pharys Nassa, Ramzy Nassa, Ross Burkinshaw, Uzair Najib, Muheeb Fazeldin and Liam Cameron. Tickets for Cameron’s fight are sponsored by G Casino: army personnel can buy then for £25 through the casino.
