He gave up his life ... yet you gave nothing

SHEFFIELD Boxing Centre fighters have helped raise £2,000 for a military charity - but others who failed to give a penny have received a sharp jab from the mother of a soldier killed in Afghanistan.

The Hillsborough boxers raised the cash in honour of 20-year-old Shiregreen serviceman Christopher Bridges.

Christopher, a senior aircraftman serving with 51 Squadron Royal Airforce Regiment, was killed on patrol around Kandahar Airfield on August 30 2007 when his vehicle was blown up by a Taliban landmine.

The boxers put on an exhibition to raise cash for the charity, Help for Heroes, which supports former service folk and their families.

Christopher's mum, Nicolette Williams, paid a heartfelt thanks to trainer Glyn Rhodes, the boxers and local firms and individuals who donated raffle prizes for an auction at Shiregreen WMC.

Their number included Indie band Arctic Monkeys, whose drummer, Matt Elders, donated a prize, which is to be auctioned separately.

But Mrs Williams made a pointed remark about those who didn't contribute to the charity.

"To the companies who couldn't or wouldn't help, I would like to say that for your tomorrows, my brave son gave his today.

"Everyone, please support our boys and girls in the services. Please stop saying it isn't our war.

"You have freedom to go to work, go shopping, have nights out etcetera. Our troops are protecting you from terrorism.

"Please remember them and the dangerous job they do with little thanks - some paying the ultimate price."

She described her son as: "My hero, your hero."

Rhodes said: "We were pleased we could show our support for Christopher, his mum and the forces charity.

"Our boxers recognise a worthwhile cause, and this is certainly one of those."
