Former world champion is back in ring

JUNIOR Witter is back - and determined to show people he still has a career ahead of him.

The 36-year-old Sheffield and Doncaster former world champion - out since defeat to current IBF and WBC light welter title holder Devon Alexander in 2009 - has overcome a knee injury and fights in Canada on February 19.

His welterweight opponent is Romanian Victor Puiu, who is five years younger and has lost one of his 21 fights.

Witter said: "The aim is to re-assert myself. Some boxers have written me off but they can tell me that in the ring.

"I have been out a long time and this fight can't come soon enough for me. As soon as I was offered it I said: 'Yes, let's get it on.'

"After I have won it, I will have one of three fights, against Matthew Hatton for the EBU (European) title or a WBC or WBA international title. These are stepping stones which will get me back to where I want to be."

Witter admitted his anterior cruciate ligament injury will partially change the style that people have been used to seeing.

"You will have to wait and see how that goes" he said. "But I have many different styles, anyway, I can change from fight to fight. The important thing is I feel sharp.

"I have family living just around the corner from the venue (Ontario) and they are buzzing about this."
