Fights not flights in summer of title bids

While many of us will be preparing for a rest over the summer, Sheffield boxing sees its busiest period for years.

The sun-tan lotion is going to have to stay in the cupboard for a good few weeks yet as July sees local boxers involved in several title fights.

Rifleman Ross Burkinshaw kicks off the title action when he travels to Sunderland to box Bristol's flashy Lee Haskins for the British super-bantamweight title in a Sky televised show on Friday July 10.

Popular Stradbroke banger John Keeton travels to the North-east for another telly date the following Friday.

The 37-year-old veteran challenges Sunderland's David Dolan for the vacant English cruiserweight title in Middlesbrough.

The following day, July 18, Hillsborough's Kell Brook is set to defend his British welterweight title against Londoner Michael Lomax on the undercard of Amir Khan's WBA title fight at Manchester's MEN Arena.

On the same night, Brook's Wincobank-trained stablemate, Norwich's Danny McIntosh, takes on Nathan Cleverly for the British and Commonwealth light-heavyweight belts at London's York Hall.

In a third July 18 bill, Crosspool fireman Jez Wilson finally gets a chance to win a title when he takes on Leeds' Lee Murtagh for the Masters middleweight belt on a dinner show at Doncaster Racecourse.

Unlucky Wilson hasn't boxed since September after seeing several fights fall through.

Just as unlucky is Blade turned boxer Curtis Woodhouse. The ex-professional footballer was hoping to get back to winning ways on July 4 on a Dave Coldwell bill in Liverpool.

But with Setanta out of the reckoning, the show is off.
