A bumper weekend of boxing lies in store for South Yorkshire this weekend.
But the shows in Barnsley and Doncaster are going to have to be pretty special if they are to compare with the Sam Matkin v Dale Hutchinson
spectacle of last Sunday.
The two slugged out a bloody draw at the Octagon, Sheffield, as they competed for the British masters welter title. Hutchinson’s trainer Chris Smedley said: “It was one of Sheffield’s best fights and people will be talking about that fight for a long time. Dale is wanting to do it again and if both camps agree it can happen again on May 18. Credit goes to both fighters who gave everything for 10 rounds and got great comments from ringside former world champion Clinton Woods and world ranked Kell Brook.”
Tonight’s card at Barnsley Metrodome contains some real warriors. Killamarsh’s Lee Connelly has his first bout since rave reviews against Luke Campbell last November. He meets Simas Volosinasin a four-rounder.
Connelly, a car mechanic, has a broken-down record (won two, lost six) but is not a protected fighter and loves testing himself. This time, he is coming for a win.
Josh Wale who has faced the likes of Gavin McDonnell and Kid Galahad is also on the bill. He faces Miklos Hevesi in a six-rounder.
Top of the show is Barnsley middleweight Ben Davies, 24, in an eight rounder against Telford’s Kieron Gray. Another local lad, Ben Wager, fights Michael Mooney. Sheffield cruiser Jon Ibbotson, who hasn’t boxed since losing at the same venue three years ago, takes on Plymouth’s Courtney Richards.
Doncaster Dome fans will hopefully witness home boy Jason Cunnigham win the vacant English bantamweight title tomorrow against Scott Gladwin, from Halifax, over 10 rounds.
There are eight rounders for Barnsley’s Andy Townend, Denaby Main’s Adam Jones as well as Bolsover’s “Ginger Rocket,” who promises a measured display against Newark’s Fergus Taylor. Doncaster’s Luke Crowcroft hopes to stretch his unbeaten record to six over Harry Matthews, who has previously been beaten by Liam Cameron and Lewis Taylor.
