DONCASTER’S hopes of being represented in this year’s junior ABA finals suffered a double knockout blow in the semi-finals at Havercroft at the weekend.

Both Scott Baghurst (Highfields) and Jake Westlake (Plant Works) bowed out against highly-rated opponents.

Baghurst came up against Birley’s Tom Wood, rated the best boxer at his weight in the UK and beyond in their Class 5 Under-43 kg bout and lost 16-6.

“Wood is a class act and we always knew that for Scott to get close to him that he would have to be on the top of his game and for Wood to have an off-day,” said Highfields coach John Loosemore. “Unfortunately from Scott’s point of view, he was razor-sharp, but he did himself proud on the day.”

Westlake lost his Class 5 Under-63kg clash against McAuley McGowan (Jimmy Egan’s Club).

“My lad lost 17-9, gave a good account of himself, “ said Plant Works’ coach Ken Blood. “But he was up against a very good lad and he left himself too much to do after a poor first round and trailed by six points.”
