Promoter Eddie Hearn has commended Gavin McDonnell and his team for their ambition after the Doncaster fighter beat three time world title contender Vusi Malinga.
McDonnell had to risk a significant step-up in class, at Hull, on Saturday. And there were times his chin was severely tested.
But he did enough to merit being awarded a points win to lift the WBO International super bantamweight title.
Hearn, one of the prime movers in the domestic scene and the man behind Kell Brook’s recent elevation to world title status, was delighted for McDonnell and his right-hand man Stefy Bull and thinks more chanmpionships can now be within his reach.
The promoter tweeted: “well done to Gav and you Stefy for your vision..lets go get some more belts.”
Hearn wasn’t the only one to tweet his support. Doncaster fighter Daniel Slaney added: “Really pleased for @bigtwinnygav, good win against a very seasoned and experienced fighter! That’ll help to move him on toward the Euro!”
Here are some other on-line offerings: “Well done @bigtwinnygav you did Doncaster proud! (Codie Marsh.) “Excellent performance from @bigtwinnygav to beat a very good fighter, well done gav.” (Bren Longy) “Brilliant display from @bigtwinnygav to beat an experienced pro like Malinga! #TeamMac” (James Beevers)
And tweeter Ryan Adams referring also to Gavin’s boxing champion brother Jamie, added: “Well done to @bigtwinnygav great performance! Bet ya can’t move in the Mcdonnell house for belts.”
